Folks — 

This week, President Trump and Elon Musk fired more than a thousand employees of the Department of Education — nearly half its workforce.

Let’s be clear: This will hurt every student across the country. 

One of the things that makes America great is our long history of being at the forefront of innovation and economic opportunity — and that’s in large part because of our strong public education system! 

Now thanks to Trump and Musk, we can expect longer processing times for student financial aid, even more problems disbursing funding for K-12 schools, and reduced oversight of programs for students with disabilities and laws regarding sexual assault on college campuses. 

These mass firings are an absolutely terrible decision, and moving forward with an executive order to fully close the Department of Education would be even worse.

There is no path for America to continue leading the world in the 21st century if the Trump Administration continues to lay waste to our education system.

I will do everything in my power to protect Virginia’s federal employees at the Education Department and the students, parents, and educators they serve — and today I’m asking for your help.

A strong public outcry can make a difference. We’ve seen this in action with the funding freeze and the absurd firing of national park workers, and we need to keep it going.
