Shannon Jones is running for Commonwealth Attorney in Newport News, Virginia. The last time voters had a chance to cast their vote for this position, Shannon was 5 years old – her opponent, Howard Gwynn, has held the seat for 35 years.

Shannon is a dedicated attorney, community leader, and advocate for justice. She’s ready to bring fresh leadership with an understanding of the updated/modern needs of the people of her city. With years of experience in public safety and the legal system, she is running because she knows the legal system could use new approaches, new ideas, and new voices.

We need more women in government NOW MORE THAN EVER. Shannon’s opponent is a male conservative Democrat. She actually reported to him directly when she worked in the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.

Shannon has years of in-the-field experience in the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and the City Attorney’s Office, and is uniquely qualified to bring a balanced, community-focused approach to prosecution that goes beyond punishment alone.

Here is a look at her platform as it pertains to women’s issues:

✅ Cases involving domestic violence, sexual assault, and other gender-based violence should be handled thoroughly and sensitively. She has a plan to make sure victims have access to necessary resources like counseling, legal support, and housing assistance.

✅ Restorative justice practices for women involved in the criminal justice system, focusing on healing and rehabilitation – particularly for those affected by systemic issues like poverty and domestic violence.

✅ All staff within the Commonwealth Attorney's Office will be properly trained to approach cases with the appropriate sensitivity to the unique challenges women face.

✅ Advocacy for policies that protect women from workplace harassment and discrimination, ensuring that offenders are held accountable.

As Shannon has stated, as Commonwealth Attorney, Shannon’s role is not to legislate policy but to uphold justice in a way that respects individual rights, including the right to make personal healthcare decisions free from government interference or criminalization. She’s prepared to ensure women’s reproductive freedom is always protected in Virginia.

As we’ve seen over the past few months, women judges have been one of our strongest defenses against the Trump administration’s efforts to break our democracy.
