WILL Announces New Leadership Roles for Strategic Growth

WILL has announced Deputy Counsel, Dan Lennington, in addition to his litigation role, will assume the position of Managing Vice President and oversee day-to-day operations of WILL as we continue to expand our litigation and policy work beyond just Wisconsin.

Additionally, WILL’s Development Director, Lesley Luehrs Quartana, is now recognized as the organization’s Chief Advancement Officer, emphasizing her pivotal role in the organization’s continued development.

WILL Founder, Rick Esenberg, remains as President and General Counsel. He will focus on strategic planning, mission development, and other outward-facing activities.

WILL President and General Counsel, Rick Esenberg, stated, “These changes in responsibilities largely reflect the growth of WILL. Our influence on the state and now, beyond, has gone farther than our wildest dreams. An organization that started as a small, nimble operation in 2011 now impacts litigation and policy from Madison to Washington, D.C., and across the nation. I believe our influence will only continue to grow due to this incredible team and the larger roles Dan and Lesley now hold within our organization.”

Wisconsin Supreme Court Declines Early Review of Act 10 Case

WILL issued a statement following the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s denial of a bypass petition in Abbotsford Education Association v. WERC, which would have allowed the state’s highest court to rule on the merits of Act 10 immediately, entirely circumventing the Court of Appeals.

WILL argued for denial of the bypass in a recent court filing and represents a teacher’s interests in this monumental case to decide the future of Act 10 in Wisconsin.

WILL Deputy Counsel, Lucas Vebber, stated, “We are pleased the Supreme Court agreed with us— that there was no need to skip over the Court of Appeals in this case. We look forward to representing our client’s interests by zealously defending Act 10 at the Court of Appeals. The Plaintiffs wrongly seek to overturn a fifteen-year-old law under a legal challenge that has already been tried and rejected elsewhere.”

WILL Meets With Members of Congress in DC

WILL Deputy Counsel and Managing Vice President, Dan Lennington, along with WILL Policy Director, Kyle Koenen, spent time on Capitol Hill this week speaking to lawmakers about how we can create serious and long-lasting wins for liberty, freedom, and true equality.

WILL Launches New Legal Effort Against American Bar Association

WILL and a coalition of civil rights and liberties organizations have filed a Title VII charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against the American Bar Association (ABA). This filing comes on the heels of new executive orders and directives from the Trump administration to eliminate unconstitutional discrimination and move toward a color-blind, merit-based approach.

Despite earlier warnings from our respective organizations and federal law, the ABA continues to violate Title VII through a series of programs discriminating based on race and sex in employment. Most prominently, the ABA’s programs illegally qualify and disqualify applicants for judicial clerkships it fills and funds based on these forbidden criteria.

WILL Promoted Education Reforms in Madison!

Last week, WILL Policy Director, Kyle Koenen, testified on AB 1, which will restore our state academic performance standards to ensure that we understand true proficiency and can best support students. Learn more.

Kyle testified, saying in part, “Wisconsin students and parents deserve the truth. Lowering the bar doesn’t help kids—it just hides failure...Parents, educators, and policymakers need honest, transparent data to ensure students are truly prepared for the future—not just given a false sense of success. Assembly Bill 1 takes a meaningful step to put us back on that track.”

Also last week, WILL Associate Counsel, Lauren Greuel, testified on AB 5, which requires school boards to make textbooks, curricula, and instructional materials available for school district residents to see. Learn more.

Lauren testified, saying in part, “Research has demonstrated again and again that parental involvement is a key factor that influences the educational outcomes of their students. As such, fostering collaboration, transparency, and trust between parents and their child’s school is one of the most important things that a school district can do.”
