Dear Reader,

InSight Crime is pleased to announce the launch of its latest investigation: "The Women Ensnared in Tren de Aragua's Criminal Web in Peru ([link removed]) ."
[link removed]

We follow the stories of eight sex workers who share a chilling reality: the violence they’ve suffered from criminal groups who extort and attack them because of their profession. These women, who serve as a criminal barometer for the city, were among the first to fall victim to the predatory economies that fueled the Tren de Aragua’s expansion in Peru.

Since the Venezuelan mega-gang arrived in 2019, dozens of sex workers who refused to pay extortion fees have been murdered, pushing violence to unprecedented levels.

Among the many dangers lurking on the streets of Peru, we also uncover the story of Isabel, a survivor of human trafficking for sexual exploitation by the Tren de Aragua. Isabel* arrived in Peru believing she had secured a job as a shop assistant, only to find herself trapped in a nightmare. Though she managed to escape, her story exposes the brutal realities of this criminal economy.

We invite you to explore the full investigation, now available on our website ([link removed]) .
