Decentralisation:
MCB’s Vision for Local Empowerment
Message from Dr Naomi Green
Asalaam Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wa barakatuhu
While London is home to a significant Muslim population, the majority of British Muslims live in communities across the rest of the UK. Challenges and opportunities facing Muslim communities vary significantly across the four nations that make up our United Kingdom.
That is why the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) will shortly be launching decentralised regional forums focused on strengthening engagement in all corners of the country, beyond London. The regional teams will be connecting and co-ordinating with the diverse spectrum of organisations already serving communities locally and regionally.
Our Vision 2050 ([link removed]) 's Empower pillar recognises that our greatest strength lies in community-led efforts. From my home in Northern Ireland, where interfaith engagement ([link removed]) is crucial to sustainable peace, to the impressive work of affiliates across the rest of the UK, I witness daily how local Muslim communities are making a difference.
Last week alone, we highlighted inspiring examples ([link removed]) of our membership partnering with police forces nationwide to support knife amnesties and creating safer communities.
The Muslim Council of Britain is committed to strengthening grassroots connections. Whether it's running food banks in Birmingham ([link removed]) , leading educational initiatives in Manchester, or supporting elderly care services in Glasgow ([link removed]) , these local contributions showcase British Muslims' commitment to serving their communities.
Insha'Allah, we will continue amplifying these voices and supporting the work of the membership's vital work. We invite you to share your local success stories as we build this network together for the common good. Wa alaykum salaam and best regards,
Wa alaykum salaam and best regards,
Dr Naomi Green
Member of the Muslim Council of Britain National Council

** This week's highlights
------------------------------------------------------------
Forging Closer Links with Northern Ireland’s Burgeoning Muslim Communities
The MCB team met leaders and innovators from across Northern Ireland to explore greater regional cooperation. As the UK's smallest Muslim population, they face unique challenges shaped by the region's complex history and social dynamics, particularly in a post-conflict society. Ongoing Islamophobic attacks which surged during last year’s UK-wide summer riots have left a deep impact. Representatives from Belfast, Derry, Enniskillen and Newtownards discussed their unified approach to addressing these challenges and explored concrete ways MCB can support their growing communities.
Setting a Gold Standard for Muslim Community Service: World Federation of Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Muslim Communities
MCB's Secretary General visited the World Federation of Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Muslim Communities' ([link removed]) (KSIMC) new headquarters in Harefield. President Alhaj Safder Jaffer showcased their impressive facilities and comprehensive global services, which deliver standardised, high-quality programmes spanning international aid, tarbiyyah, research and education to Khoja communities worldwide.
Meeting the Oldest British-Nigerian Muslim Community
MCB met with the Muslim Association of Nigeria UK and Old Kent Road Mosque leadership to strengthen collaboration with one of Britain's most established Muslim communities. The Association, which represents thousands of Nigerian Muslims across the UK, discussed concrete steps for future partnership with Professor Mashood Baderin, Abdu-Jelil Oladejo, and senior community leaders. The historic Old Kent Road Mosque ([link removed]) , home to Britain's oldest Nigerian Muslim community, is currently undergoing modernisation to better serve its growing congregation.
Twenty Years of Community Success at Finsbury Park Mosque
Last week, at Finsbury Park Mosque's twentieth refounding anniversary celebrations, Dr Wajid Akhter, our Secretary General, reminded us ([link removed]) that a mosque's true beauty lies in its people – a centre whose transformative journey has been widely recognised.
