John,
Trump’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has made an unprecedented and outrageous request to the Treasury Department: reassign thousands of IRS agents from their essential role in investigating wealthy tax evaders and enforcing tax laws to instead serve as immigration officers.[1]
This is a blatant abuse of executive power, hijacking an agency tasked with ensuring economic fairness to instead carry out Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda.
The IRS is meant to support taxpayers and businesses, and hold the ultra-rich and huge corporations accountable, not to serve as a deportation force. Reassigning these agents would mean fewer investigations into billionaire tax cheats and more opportunities for the wealthy to illegally evade what they owe.
Undocumented immigrants already contribute significantly to the economy, many paying taxes at a higher rate than corporations like Amazon. Yet, instead of targeting fraudsters―the ultra-wealthy and big corporations that evade billions in taxes each year―Trump’s administration is diverting tax enforcement resources to target vulnerable communities.
We cannot allow this to happen. Congress must launch an immediate investigation into the administration’s reckless, and likely illegal, overreach. Congress must stop the reassignment of IRS agents to immigration enforcement. Send a message to your members of Congress now.
The administration’s move comes at a time when tax enforcement is more critical than ever.
Over the past decade, IRS budget cuts have already allowed corporate tax evasion to skyrocket, costing the American public hundreds of billions of dollars in lost revenue. And now, instead of strengthening tax enforcement, the administration wants to weaponize the IRS for immigration crackdowns.
The IRS program to track down wealthy tax cheats will be gutted, while fear and uncertainty spread through immigrant communities.
It’s a lose-lose scenario, except for Trump’s billionaire donors who will face even less scrutiny as tax enforcement grinds to a halt.
We need to act now. Congress must investigate this abuse of power and stop IRS agents from being used as pawns in Trump’s mass deportation agenda. Take action today.
Together, we can protect tax fairness and stop this reckless power grab.
