John,
It’s official: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was just confirmed to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, with all but one Republican voting yes.
This confirmation is dangerous: during his hearings, RFK Jr. made clear that his allegiance to President Trump is stronger than his allegiance to the American people. Despite his previous support for pro-choice policies, he confirmed that he will implement Trump’s anti-choice agenda, no matter how extreme.
During the confirmation hearings, Sen. Maggie Hassan (NH) put it plainly:
"If President Trump orders you [RFK Jr.] to take action to make it harder for women to get direly-needed health care, you will follow his orders."
RFK Jr. indicated that he’s open to restricting mifepristone, a safe abortion medication originally approved by the FDA decades ago.
Governors and state legislators are already preparing against pending attacks by stockpiling the medication and creating additional protections for healthcare providers.
RFK Jr. also indicated that he’s open to the idea that abortion bans should block emergency room doctors from providing care to pregnant patients in emergency situations—a stance that would fundamentally change the standard of care for pregnancy across the country.
State lawmakers in places like Colorado are fighting back with bills that enshrine what were previously federal protections into state law.
On days like today, we’re so grateful to our state and local leaders who are showing up on the front lines of the fight for reproductive freedom.
We’re proud to support pro-choice champions at every level, and we’re thankful to be doing this work with you.
In solidarity,
Team Vote Pro-Choice
