Riots Across the Nation

What to Know: Riots have engulfed many big cities in the U.S.

The TPPF Take: TPPF’s Chuck DeVore was a National Guardsman during the 1992 Los Angeles Riots.

“There’s a big difference between peaceful protests calling for change, and violent mobs looting and setting fires,” Chuck says. “Most elected officials are sympathetic to the protests, but too many have erred in not working to keep their cities safe.”

Caps and Downs

What to Know: “Typical” graduations aren’t taking place this spring in Texas, as school districts adapt to the coronavirus pandemic.

The TPPF Take: Here’s some advice for grads: Become a joiner. Community bonds enrich our lives.

“Facebook is fine for keeping up with friends and family. But it’s no substitute for in-person relationships and tangible trust,” says TPPF’s Kevin Roberts. “COVID-19 and stay-at-home orders have undermined community, but not our need for it.”

Solitary

What to Know: Some jails and prisons are using solitary confinement to separate inmates with COVID-19.

The TPPF Take: Solitary confinement is a punishment, not a preventative.

“Quarantines and medical isolation must be distinguished operationally from prolonged solitary confinement,” says TPPF’s Marc Levin. “Observing these distinctions is not only essential to liberty and dignity, but also necessary to minimize the number of prisoners who refrain from seeking medical assistance when they are sick for fear of being placed in a setting little or no different from punitive solitary confinement.”
