Just a few moments ago, 145 members of the House released a congressional letter slamming President Trump’s abhorrent, unworkable plan to “take over” Gaza and force out 2 million Palestinians who call the land home.
This is a big deal. The fact that this letter is signed by over two-thirds of House Democrats – including a majority of the Jewish members – is deeply meaningful.
“The United States cannot promote forced displacement as a solution to this conflict,” the letter reads. The proposal is not only “morally indefensible” but “risks destabilizing the delicate ceasefire currently in place, endangering hostages still being held by Hamas, fueling extremist sentiments, and serving as a recruiting tool for terrorist organizations.”
Such a broadly signed letter sends a powerful message to partner countries and pro-peace Israelis and Palestinians that there is major dissent in the United States about this proposal. With our allies in Congress, we’re making clear that most Jewish and pro-Israel Americans see Trump’s plan as a gross violation of our values and a path only to more war, chaos and misery.
Together, we have to keep pressing our allies to forcefully push back against dangerous policies from Trump, Netanyahu and the pro-war, pro-annexation, anti-democratic forces on the extreme right both here and in Israel. We have to give voice to our values, and we have to fight for them too.
