Dear John,

We wanted you to be one of the first to hear the news!

Right on the heels of successfully protecting Sonoma Coast Redwoods, we have another exciting opportunity in Sonoma County: A long-awaited chance to secure the 1,517-acre Monte Rio Redwoods Expansion—a stunning redwood forest just south of the Russian River.

This purchase will close the last remaining gap between Sonoma Coast State Park and Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park, expanding outdoor access for the health and well-being of communities across the Bay Area and beyond. It’s the “missing link” needed to connect more than 34 square miles of redwood forest, open meadows, and streams—potential habitat for wildlife such as American badgers and California quail, not to mention threatened coho salmon.

“A connected landscape is a resilient one,” says Sam Hodder, League president and CEO. “Securing this property will connect a critical corridor of contiguous, conserved habitat from the Bohemian Highway to the Pacific Coast. The addition of more than 1,500 acres of new parkland will be a terrific benefit to residents and visitors, providing access to spectacular recreational trails and inspiring views of the Russian River Valley.”

This acquisition also creates an opportunity to restore the health and cultural significance of the ancestral lands of the Kashia Band of Pomo Indians and the Southern Pomo territory of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria.

This project is big: Together with our conservation partner, the Sonoma Land Trust, we’re looking to raise the remaining $4 million for this acquisition by May 30.

We plan to transfer this land to Sonoma County as a future addition to Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park—an expansion that would quadruple the park’s size. This continues a decades-long effort to restore Sonoma’s historic redwood corridor, with more than 15,000 acres already protected by the League and our dedicated supporters.

Now is the time to act, as this coveted property faces significant risk of residential development. Together with local partners and supporters like you, we can secure this essential landscape and preserve its ecological, cultural, and recreational value for generations to come.

This is a shared opportunity—a chance to be part of something much larger than any one of us. Learn more about this incredible place and how you can help.
