This week we celebrated a huge victory for the people of Hawaii.
The Hawaii State Supreme Court unanimously upheld a crucial ruling — clearing the path for a historic $4 billion settlement that will provide much-needed relief to victims of the Maui wildfires and bringing us one step closer to delivering justice for families affected by the tragedy.

The Supreme Court affirmed the decision to prevent insurance companies from pursuing additional litigation that could have stalled or reduced compensation for victims — which means that more than 17,000 wildfire survivors, including those who filed lawsuits, can now receive the financial support they desperately need without interference from insurance corporations.
"We reached this historic settlement for the wildfire survivors on Maui through a collaborative effort to do what is right for our people,” Governor Josh Green said, “and this result represents our values.”
Governor Green has remained committed to standing with the people of Maui, making sure that those who suffered most receive the resources they need to rebuild and heal.
This victory comes after a year and a half of efforts to hold responsible parties accountable and make certain that insurance companies could not delay or divert compensation meant for survivors.
Thanks to this decision, victims should begin receiving payments before the second anniversary of the disaster in August.
Hawaiian Electric, the State of Hawaii, Kamehameha Schools, Spectrum Oceanic LLC, and Hawaiian Telcom have agreed to fund the settlement, demonstrating a commitment to Maui’s recovery and rebuilding efforts.
While challenges remain, this ruling is a powerful affirmation that when we stand together, we can deliver real results for our communities.
As we continue our work to rebuild and restore Lahaina and surrounding communities, this week we can take a moment to recognize the strength, resilience, and unity that brought us to this victory — thank you for standing with Governor Green and the people of Maui during this fight.
