We know that the Trump administration is hellbent on targeting immigrants, trans people, abortion seekers, activists, journalists, and more. To do that, they need information—who we are, what we look like, where we go, what we buy, our legal status, and our health information. Lucky for them, Big Tech companies are scraping, storing, and selling sensitive data like that day in and day out.

With Trump cozied up to Big Tech CEOs like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg,² he’s ready to exploit their surveillance capitalist business model to get his dirty work done. And with Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” gaining access to millions of Americans’ private data³ and Google, Apple, and Microsoft bending the knee to Trump’s agenda,⁴ it’s clearer than ever that unfettered surveillance is putting us all at risk.

Why target Democrats at the state level? We’re clear-eyed about how we got here. For far too long, many Democrats have failed to champion the necessary policies to protect us from this exploitation. The good news is: there are several really excellent, battle-tested laws states could put in place now to fight back.

It’s time. We’ve been pushing for common sense privacy measures for years.⁵ Democratic state leaders have got to finally step up and play offense on the human right to privacy.
