Hi John - As I write this, our country is experiencing incredible turmoil. Centuries of pain resulting from systemic racism are pouring out into our streets. People are hurting and are at a loss for what to do to help address the inequities people of color face. Today, Save the Children released a new childhood report that puts a fine point on the impact on children of color. The report, called Land of Inopportunity: Closing the Childhood Equity Gap for America’s Kids found a sharp racial divide in America that limits the opportunities for children of color.[1] Counties with predominantly minority populations comprise three-quarters of the nation’s bottom 50 counties for kids, despite only accounting for 12 percent of counties nationwide. These children are missing out on the childhood that every single child in our nation deserves. Sadly, it’s not only racial inequities that can affect a child’s future; economic and social injustices also lead to greater likelihoods of children dying before their first birthday, facing food insecurity and dropping out of high school. This is not a time to be silent. And one of the most powerful ways we can speak up, is to vote up and down the ballot. Today, I’m asking you to commit to vote for the future of every child who is missing out on their childhood. Whether you’ve been voting for decades or this is one of your first elections, your commitment to vote in favor of equity for all children is a promise to our future. Please commit to vote today. Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
