John,
Last week, I asked you all to name Black champions and leaders who have inspired you, and you listened. Seeing someone honor one of my greatest mentors, Hazel Erby, moved me deeply. She was a true St. Louis gem, and her impact will live on for generations.
Before Hazel Erby made history as the first Black woman elected to the St. Louis County Council, she was a dedicated activist, always fighting for our communities. She started as president of the Parent Teacher Organization, organizing for better schools, resources, and opportunities for our children. And when she stepped into office, she didn’t stop — she became a politivist , using her power to advocate for Black businesses, working families, and women who had long been overlooked. She led with love and conviction, and she never wavered in the face of injustice.
In fact, in 2018, she championed the legislation setting minority participation standards in county contracts, and secured funding for a North County recreation center in 2019. She also played an instrumental role in initiating youth and job development programs in St. Louis and mentoring young Black politicians — like myself.
She shattered barriers, paved the way, and inspired me in more ways than I can count. And personally, she believed in me when so many others did not. I am forever grateful. Rest In Peace, Mama Hazel. May your memory be a blessing. ❤️
