Every new year is a time to start fresh. In a new article for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Real Stories blog, Dr. Corbin J. Standley, AFSP’s senior director of impact communication and continuous improvement, reflected on the insight gained from the 2024 Public Perception of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Poll, conducted in partnership with the Harris Poll, The National Action Alliance, and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. The poll revealed that 91% of people believe that suicide can be prevented at least some of the time; and that many people are motivated to play a role in saving lives. It also showed that nine out of ten people believe that employers and the media and entertainment industry also have a role to play in supporting mental health and suicide prevention.
There are many ways we can all get involved in the coming year: from connecting with your local AFSP chapter; to becoming a Volunteer Advocate and pushing for smart public policy related to mental health and suicide prevention; to participating in an Out of the Darkness Walk; to bringing an AFSP program to your community.
