Hello there,
I hope you’re doing well. Thanks again for everything you have done to help me get to Congress. Now I need to balance my desire to work together to get things done and reform our government with the need to make sure we protect the Constitution.
One year ago today, we shocked the nation by winning a toss-up special election.
The “experts” and pundits said that we couldn’t do it. They said I couldn’t win as a Democrat by talking about fixing the border and cutting costs. They said those were Republican issues. But that’s nonsense–those are American issues. Good people of both parties want leaders who will use common sense and find common ground to solve our problems. That’s what I ran on in the special election, and with your help, we won.
Then, last November, I won re-election in a district that President Trump also won. More evidence that the American people want Democrats and Republicans to work together to fix our problems and move our country forward.
Since President Trump took office last month, many constituents have reached out to me with increasing concern about some of the executive actions, Elon Musk’s role, and more. Others have encouraged me to stay the course, continuing to emphasize bipartisan cooperation.
I will do both.
I’ve been clear that I’m willing to work with President Trump and Republicans when it makes sense, like on fixing the border, [[link removed]] rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse, and restoring the SALT deduction. [[link removed]]
But I’ll also fight back when I have to–like if they go after Social Security, or Medicare, or simply ignore the Constitution. When I learned that Musk and DOGE gained access to sensitive taxpayer data, I called on my colleagues to demand transparency. When I learned funding freezes would affect crucial local programming, like Great Neck / Manhasset Head Start, I convened Health and Human Services leadership to ensure that funding would continue. [[link removed]] When I heard that Musk was targeting NIH funding, jeopardizing critical science research at labs across my district including Cold Spring Harbor Labs, I made sure to speak out forcefully. At the same time, I am Chairing the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus [[link removed]] and pursuing a bipartisan fix to the border and immigration. [[link removed]]
That’s the kind of common-sense approach that our country needs-to work together when we can and battle when we must. And it’s what the people of Long Island and Queens elected me to do. I’m counting on my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to help me deliver.
So today, let’s get back to that approach. I’ll be here in Congress fighting for you, but I can’t do it alone. Talk to your neighbors and friends, it doesn’t matter whoever they voted for, and make your voices heard. I’ll be in this fight with you.
And if you’re looking for another way to get involved, I hope you’ll consider chipping into my re-election campaign. [[link removed]]

Thank you,
Tom
