Donald Trump and Elon Musk are pulling off an opposite Robin Hood scheme — taking money from working people and handing it back to the ultra-wealthy.
Here’s what’s going on, John.
The primary agency responsible for protecting Americans from large corporations victimizing consumers — the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) — has just been shuttered by Trump and Elon Musk. This agency has saved Americans $21 billion by holding corporations accountable. Just last month, it sued Capitol One for failing to pay customers over $2 billion they were owed.
After the 2008 financial crisis, a bipartisan group of senators voted to create the CFPB to enforce transparency and prevent illegal activity from banks and financial lenders.
So, of course, Trump is dismantling it — to protect his billionaire donors and mega-corporate allies, including Elon Musk, who stands to benefit directly.
Musk is aggressively expanding his financial services empire through X by rolling out digital payment options — and the CFPB is one of the key agencies overseeing digital payment platforms. Just last year, the CFPB proposed a rule to regulate large digital wallets and payment apps — something that would have impacted Musk’s financial ambitions. By eliminating the CFPB, Musk would be able to operate his financial ventures unchecked, avoiding consumer protections and compliance costs while profiting at the expense of working Americans.
Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has also taken control of key systems within the CFPB, effectively stalling oversight of big tech companies and halting critical investigations. This isn’t about policy — it’s about billionaires rigging the system to enrich themselves.
By gutting the CFPB, Trump is giving corporate America a green light to steal from consumers, while working families foot the bill. It’s an intentional redistribution of wealth — away from everyday Americans and into the pockets of the ultra-rich.
We can’t let them get away with this, John.
I’m joining my fellow Senate Democrats to expose Trump and Musk’s reckless dismantling of consumer protections. Trump’s so-called “MAGA promise” is a farce — his policies serve only himself and his wealthiest allies, while everyday Americans pay the price.
Please, John, chip in a few dollars to my work to amplify how the Trump administration is actively harming the American people. We need to share these messages as widely as possible so voters know the stakes.
