EMET Deeply Commends Senators Tim Scott (R-SC) and Jacky Rosen (D-NV) for Introducing the Antisemitism Awareness Act

The Endowment for Middle East Truth (EMET) is proud to applaud Senators Tim Scott (R-SC) and Jacky Rosen (D-NV) for their commendable efforts in introducing the Senate version of the Antisemitism Awareness Act. This important, bipartisan piece of legislation marks a significant step forward in the fight against antisemitism in the United States.

Antisemitism has been a persistent and troubling issue, impacting Jewish communities across the nation. According to Hillel International, incidents of antisemitism in our education institutions since October 7, 2023, have risen by 700 per cent. The Antisemitism Awareness Act aims to address and combat this form of hatred by providing a clear definition of antisemitism. This definition is a crucial tool for federal and private education programs and institutions to recognize and appropriately respond to antisemitic incidents.

The introduction of the Senate version of the Antisemitism Awareness Act is a pivotal moment in the ongoing battle against hate and discrimination. By adopting the definition of antisemitism used by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), the act ensures that educational institutions will have the necessary guidelines to identify and address antisemitic behavior effectively.

EMET has long been an advocate for stronger measures to combat antisemitism and has worked since 2016 on the introduction and passage of this critically important legislation. Our organization believes that this act will provide much-needed clarity and support for educational institutions, allowing them to foster a safer and more inclusive environment for all students. EMET applauds Senators Tim Scott and Jacky Rosen for their bipartisan effort in addressing this critical issue.

EMET would also like to thank the other 34 original cosponsors of the act, including Senators Charles “Chuck” Schumer (D-NY), James Lankford (R-OK), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Rick Scott (R-FL), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Susan Collins (R-ME), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), Mike Crapo (R-ID), John Hickenlooper (D-CO), Katie Britt (R-AL), Ron Wyden (D-OR), John Cornyn (R-TX), Chris Coons (D-DE), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), John Boozman (R-AR), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), John Fetterman (D-PA), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Adam Schiff (D-CA), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Mark Warner (D-VA), John Barrasso (R-WY), Gary Peters (D-MI), Steve Daines (R-MT), and Cory Booker (D-NJ).

Says Sarah Stern, EMET Founder and President, “Across the United States, particularly since October 7, 2023, Jewish, Zionist and Israeli students have been under increasing assault. Across our nation, these students, in practically every university, have been verbally, and sometimes physically, threatened, bullied and intimidated. Many of our students have been excluded from certain clubs, events, or social groups, simply because of their Jewish identities, or their connections to the land of Israel. No one should be forced to conceal who they are, at their very core. When one is feeling that he or she is in a hostile environment, and is feeling intimidated, bullied, or threatened, simply for walking across the campus or the quad, how can these students be amenable to learning? We need to offer our Jewish, Zionist, and Israeli students the very same protections as any other minority group in the United States.

The introduction of the Senate version of the Antisemitism Awareness Act reflects the strong efforts of Senators Tim Scott and Jacky Rosen in addressing antisemitism. EMET applauds their efforts, and those of the act’s cosponsors, and looks forward to the positive impact this legislation will have on combating hatred and fostering understanding across the United States.”
