If you’ve been reading the headlines this week, John, I don’t need to tell you: our democracy is in a full-blown crisis.
-
FIRST: Elon Musk was designated a “special government employee” with special, unchecked power by President Trump, after spending more than $290 million to get him elected. [1]
-
THEN: He attempted to freeze all federal spending – until a torrent of public outrage forced Trump to rescind that order as quickly as it was issued. [2]
-
NOW: Musk’s “DOGE” advisory task force is targeting federal workers, attempting to shut down entire government agencies, even seizing “full access” to the U.S. Treasury. [3]
If we don’t put a stop to this, next they’ll come after our schools, our hospitals, and everything else that millions of Americans depend on. So, why are so few in Congress calling this what it is: a hostile takeover of our government?
Even many Democrats voted to confirm more of Trump and the Heritage Foundation’s Cabinet nominees. And even as I write you, they’re going along in regular order as though these individuals hadn’t already demonstrated their lack of qualifications and commitment to our rule of law.
Our elected officials, no matter their party, need to speak up for the people. As your voice in Washington, D.C., Common Cause is prepared to do just that. Here at Common Cause, we’re treating this like the full-blown emergency it is – and this week, we launched our Fire Elon Musk campaign to do something about it.
Last week, we rallied in D.C. at the Treasury Department. And across the country, thousands of Common Cause members have called their senators – Democrat, Republican, or Independent – demanding they do their jobs.
We have big plans to escalate this effort in the coming weeks, with mobile billboards, newspaper front-page ads, and petition deliveries at district offices in red, blue, and purple states.
We know what’s on the line – and because we’re not beholden to billionaire donors, we’re counting on folks like you to make sure we can show up like this moment requires.
Will you chip in $10 right now to help fund our advocacy, lobbying, and public messaging efforts to DEMAND Trump fire Elon Musk?
Together, we can defend our democracy.
Thank you,
The team at Common Cause
