John, it’s Senator Durbin.

Today is Valentine’s Day, a celebration of love in all its forms.

One of my greatest loves has always been for my country – and that’s why I have spent my life fighting to make it a country that loves all its people in return.

In 2001, I introduced the Dream Act to protect undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children from deportation. Though I am still fighting to pass this important legislation and permanently protect Dreamers, my request in 2010 that President Obama stand up for this group of young adults led to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. I am grateful that DACA has allowed more than 800,000 people to live in the country they love.

But the rights of Dreamers and so many others are at risk of being stripped away by the current administration. From Day One, President Trump has been launching attacks on immigrants, LGBTQ+ Americans, and communities of color. Despite the love and dedication these groups have shown to our country, this administration is responding to them with hatred – and we have to fight back.
