[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy
Seven years ago, a lone gunman walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida and killed seventeen people in what remains to this day the deadliest high school mass shooting in modern American history.
The response from the Republicans was, predictably, to offer nothing more than their thoughts and prayers for the victims and their families.
Today I want to talk about why that is.
Why is it that, despite virtually unanimous American support for things like universal background checks, do Republicans fight to stop common-sense legislation supported by Democrats, Independents, and Republicans alike?
The answer is quite simple: they are protecting the profits of billionaire gun manufacturers.
The firearm industry is a multi-billion dollar industry annually. The fact that the leading cause of death among children in this country is guns, the suicides, the school shootings, the women who live in fear of domestic abusers with guns ... that is just the cost of doing business.
Would universal background checks, an assault weapons ban, limits on high-capacity magazines, and laws preventing domestic abusers from buying guns save lives?
Of course, they would.
I can assure you everyone in Congress knows that, no matter what party they are part of.
Would those same laws significantly cut into the profits of gun manufacturers? Yes. And that's the problem.
But honestly, it's even worse than that.
You have many members of Congress who work overtime to create constant fear and paranoia about people coming to hurt you, and the government coming to take your weapons.
Look at gun sales after virtually every major mass shooting of the past 15 years. The carnage is devastating and unimaginable for American families, but it's good for business if you're in the gun industry.
The good news is, Americans are waking up to this con. In 2024, mass shootings and gun deaths fell to their lowest level in five years. That’s a direct result of the work we’ve done together to enact gun safety legislation — and it’s a reminder of the power we have when we fight for one another.
The bad news is, we're going to have to redouble our efforts in the years ahead with Trump in the White House and Republicans in control of Congress.
That is what I intend to do. I hope I can count on you to stay with me in this fight. The American people are with us.
Every best wish,
Chris Murphy
Chris Murphy is at the forefront of fights to protect our progress and rebuild the Democratic Party. His leadership in the Senate has never been more important.
Chris is committed to solving the big, systemic issues that plague working families and have led to our broken status quo. Small-dollar donations ensure he can stay focused on the work we elected him to do.
Please consider making a contribution to support Senator Murphy’s leadership and work in the Senate. Our movement is powered by people. We don’t take a dime from PACs or corporations — because Chris refuses to be beholden to billionaires and corporate interests like the gun lobby who profit off the status quo at our expense.
