John – have you heard of the Taxpayer Data Protection Act?

I became an original co-sponsor of this critical legislation because I believe our Treasury Department must have strong safeguards in place to protect your private information from unauthorized access—from figures like Elon Musk and others who have no business handling your sensitive data.

Our nation's payment system processes around $200 billion every day, and until recently, access to it was strictly limited. That was until the Trump Administration gave unqualified individuals at DOGE, including Elon Musk, access to the Treasury Department’s highly sensitive information – including names, addresses, bank account numbers, and Social Security numbers.

The Taxpayer Data Protection Act will establish strict barriers around this activity. It ensures that only public servants with top security clearances, no conflicts of interest, who are not “special government employees,” and have served as federal employees for at least one year are allowed to access the check writing facility. John, will you add your name to our petition and urge House Republicans to pass the Taxpayer Data Protection Act?

The Taxpayer Data Protection Act will:

• Protect the nation’s payment system from reckless and unlawful interference.
• Ensure that anyone accessing the system:
  • Has lawful authorization
  • Has a reliable track record of professional service
  • Has the necessary security clearance
  • Has made an ethics commitment and has no conflicts of interest
  • Has appropriate cyber security training
• Ensure that anyone who accesses the federal government’s central payment system with a personal financial conflict faces criminal penalties.
• Ensure that Congress and the public have notice of any unauthorized access and an assessment of any cyber and national security risks or interference with federal payments.
