I’ll be honest: I don’t usually make a big deal about Valentine’s Day.

But this year, it feels especially important to share my love and appreciation for Emily: my hardworking partner, my caring wife, and yes, my duly elected representative!

So, for today, I’m celebrating our nearly 20 years together — and I’m not letting anyone steal our joy.

Signing the card and leaving a note is a small act, but it means the world to both of us.

It’s a scary time for the LGBTQ+ community, and especially for our trans friends and neighbors.

We know firsthand how quickly things can change. When Emily and I first met, we didn’t have the right to legally marry in most of the country. It took years of activism and millions of people speaking out to expand marriage equality to all Americans. Now, those basic rights are under attack — and some right-wing politicians are urging the Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges .

Emily is working hard in D.C. to defend all our neighbors' rights, safety, and dignity, no matter what they look like or who they love.
