Hi John,
I wanted to make sure you knew what happened at the global investor summit this week.
The government held a showcase on health and education. Why would you present our core public services at an international investment summit unless you plan on privatising them?
At the start of the year, David Seymour was talking about privatising health, and when Prime Minister Christopher Luxon was asked if that was on the table, he refused to rule it out.
Now this.
Labour supports investment in our economy, if it is good for New Zealanders. But we will oppose any steps towards the private ownership or operation of core public services like our schools, hospitals, and prisons.
These assets are owned by New Zealanders, for New Zealand, and that should not change. We will not be tenants in our own hospitals.
Private healthcare in the US means many people don’t access it. People have to pay huge sums to give birth, for surgeries and treatments, and there are significant disparities in accessing healthcare. I don’t want that here.
I also don’t want a model where only money buys the best education. I want every child to have opportunities to learn and thrive in New Zealand and we should keep working towards a world class public education system, not give up and sell it off.
If you agree, tell the Prime Minister.

People who are considering investing in New Zealand want certainty, so when I spoke at the summit, I made Labour’s position clear. It is important that good investments transcend governments so we can build for the future, but Labour does not support the private ownership or operation of our schools, hospitals, and prisons.
Labour believes that every New Zealander should be able to access well-funded public services, like healthcare, no matter their background or income. While we support foreign investment to grow our economy, we will not sell off our country for a quick buck.
In just 18 months, Christopher Luxon’s Government has defunded and destabilised core public services. Now, they seem to be heading toward privatisation to patch over their damage.
I wanted to make sure you knew that Labour will not stand for that.
Ia manuia,
Barbara Edmonds
Spokesperson for Finance and Economy, Savings and Investment
