John,

Soon the United States Senate will hold a vote on a six-month Continuing
Resolution (CR) to fund our government.

I am a hard no. I hope this CR is defeated, but I fear it may not be. Let
me tell you more about the stakes of this vote and why I am so adamantly
opposed.

This is a power giveaway to an executive that is already drunk with power.

It would embolden the president to continue illegally tearing down
government services to people in need. Closing Social Security offices.
Slashing Medicaid. Empowering mass deportations and more.

But worst of all is that by voting for this continuing resolution we would
be giving him that power. It’s one thing for those who aspire to
dictatorship to take power. It is another to knowingly give it away.

I will not do that.

Since taking office, Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and their enablers have
arrogated to themselves powers that do not belong to them under the
Constitution. They have done so to slash benefits to hardworking Americans
to fund a tax cut for billionaires.

If we pass this CR, we will own what the president does for the next six
months. And John,
if you’re like me, you do not want any
ownership over his autocratic, harmful agenda.

John, I’ve
heard from concerned citizens about what happens if the government shuts
down. That is certainly not the desired outcome.

But if the government shuts down, it is on Republicans. They control the
House, the Senate, the White House, and the Supreme Court. If we knowingly
hand more power to Donald Trump, that is on us.

Personally, this is not a hard decision. I am desperately worried about
the direction of this country — as are so many others — and I refuse to
give the executive branch a blank check to continue tearing down our
democracy.

I will vote no on this CR, and I will continue speaking out against it.
