Earlier this week, my colleagues and I organized a discharge petition in Congress to force a vote on my resolution to allow proxy voting for new parents. With House Republican leadership refusing to consider my bipartisan proposal in the Rules Committee, I traveled to Washington with my newborn son to take matters into my own hands.

Listen, I know that’s a lot of borderline incomprehensible Washington speak, so let me translate: After I introduced my Proxy Voting for New Parents Resolution , it was referred to the GOP-controlled House Rules Committee for a vote. But Republicans refused to even hold a vote on it.

To get around their blockade, we organized a discharge petition — a tool that, with 218 signatures, forces a vote on the House floor. Now, it’s guaranteed a vote.

I’m going to keep fighting to level the playing field for regular families and young women — and I won’t allow Republican leadership to stop me.

If we want Congress to truly understand the needs of the American people, we need people there who actually understand their struggles. But the current Congress is the third-oldest in American history! We need to make it more welcoming to women and young parents like myself.

If you agree that my proxy voting resolution is a commonsense step towards a Congress that reflects the people it serves, will you chip in today to support my work? With your help, we can show Congress that nobody fights harder than a mom.
