Politics in a Nutshell
First Funnel Week Shows Republicans’ Skewed Priorities [[link removed]]
Instead of focusing on Iowa’s freefalling ag economy (John Deere recently announced its 16th round of layoffs) Iowa Republicans made sure to keep a bill alive during the first funnel week at the state house that gives jail time to public librarians who add certain books to their collections. Another heinous example of Republican legislators overstepping their bounds by attempting to seize control over local library boards.
Trump Plans More Layoffs for the VA [[link removed]]
The Department of Veterans Affairs is planning on cutting its workforce by 76,000 employees to comply with orders from the Trump administration to reduce its staff. This will be a huge blow to the VA and the services it provides. Many veterans will lose critical help at the same time that thousands more veterans will lose their jobs with the VA. Iowa has over 4,700 citizens who work at the VA. It is unknown how many will be laid off in the coming purge.
Iowa Republicans Try to Stop People from Controlling the Weather [[link removed]]
Republicans in the Iowa House are as busy as ever ignoring the needs of their constituents. Some have used their valuable time to create a bill, House File 191, that bans geoengineering in our state; geoengineering being the process of attempting to change the climate to counter global warming. Apparently, some Representatives are receiving emails from Iowans concerned that ‘somebody’ is spraying ‘something’ into the clouds. The Iowa ag industry may be in trouble, but it seems like the chemtrail conspiracy is more important! An oldie but a goodie.
U.S. Education Department says it is cutting nearly half of all staff [[link removed]]
Trump is acting on his plan to destroy the Department of Education, and his opening move is to cripple its workforce. All divisions with the agency are said to be seeing cuts, which will ultimately result in over 1,300 Americans losing their jobs. The children and young adults that rely on DOE programs like Pell Grants, student loans, special needs assistance, will be hurt by a reduction in employees and therefore in quality of service. There simply won’t be enough employees to carry the load. Donald Trump has begun his attack on education, and it will be up to us to hold him accountable.

What We Need To Know: Does Grassley support Trump’s current trade war? Canada is Iowa’s largest trading partner, and Iowa farmers rely on both exports to and imports from our northern neighbor to stay in business. How severely will they be affected by these tariffs? Where does Grassley stand on it? Call your senator today and ask him these questions. Don't let him stay silent on the trade war that is hurting Iowa farmers and businesses.
Senator Joni Ernst: (202) 224-3254
What We Need To Know: Does Ernst support Trump’s current trade war? Canada is Iowa’s largest trading partner, and Iowa farmers rely on both exports to and imports from our northern neighbor to stay in business. How severely will they be affected by these tariffs? Where does Ernst stand on it? Call your senator today and ask her these questions. Don't let her stay silent on the trade war that is hurting Iowa farmers and businesses.
Governor Kim Reynolds: (515) 281-5211
What We Need To Know: does Reynolds support Trump’s current trade war? Canada is Iowa’s largest trading partner, and Iowa farmers rely on both exports to and imports from our northern neighbor to stay in business. What is Reynolds’ plan to help them? How is she going to address the current and growing ag slowdown? Call your governor today and ask her these questions. Don't let her stay silent on the trade war that is hurting Iowa farmers and businesses.

Note From the Chair
Hey folks! Rita Hart here.
News this week has been just as hectic as last. Trump’s tariffs against Canada, Mexico, and China came back in full force, before being immediately, or at least partially, rescinded. Trump likely saw the hundreds of billions of dollars the stock market lost immediately after his decision and chickened out of his own policies yet again. While this impacted the price of corn and made the week harder than it needed to be for Iowa farmers, Iowa’s Republican congressional delegation nor Iowa Senator Joni Ernst talked about the tariffs at all. They seem to either be too scared to stand up to Trump, or they’re just not that serious about their promises to help our farmers. They do not want to be put on the record about the tariffs.
Our congressional delegation has also been quiet about Trump’s plan to lay off over 76,000 VA employees, which will be a devastating blow to our veterans. Vets who work there, and vets who rely on their services, are both being left out in the cold.
It’s up to us to resist the damage being done to our economy, our government, and our citizens. It’s also up to us to make sure that Iowans are aware of the source of these disastrous policies; It’s vitally important, to let Americans know why we’re crying foul and standing in opposition to these foolhardy policy changes.
Our work continues,
Sincerely,
Rita Hart
