Emily spoke on the House floor about how Medicaid helped her family care for her sister, Olivia, who was born with complex medical needs:

Here’s a snippet of Emily’s speech:

When I was seven years old, my sister Olivia was born with microcephaly.

What that means is that her brain was small and the doctors didn’t know why.

They didn’t know if she would live, how long she would live, or what her life would look like.

I grew up in a family of public servants. A bipartisan family. A biracial family.

My dad, who was a civilian employee of the Department of Defense, had pretty good government employee insurance — but that insurance would not have covered all of the surgeries, the specialists, or the equipment Olivia needed to thrive.

But, gratefully for our family, the Washington State Legislature in 1993 voted to expand Medicaid, one of the first states in the country to lead that charge. And what that meant for us was that we didn’t have to worry about losing our house or what other bills that we would pay so that Olivia could survive and thrive.

There are millions of Americans with stories like this.

But Republicans in Congress want to gut Medicaid to pay for tax breaks for their billionaire donors.

The more we share our stories, the more pressure will build on House Republicans to vote against these disgraceful cuts. We only need to peel off a few votes!
