School Green Teams is wrapping up for the 2024-2025 school year

As the 2024-2025 School Green Teams competition comes to a close, remember to submit your team’s points on the Activity Tracker by May 2, 2025.

What is School Green Teams?

School Green Teams is a yearly competition where schools across Fort Worth compete against each other by completing environmental activities to earn points for their school. The winning school becomes the School Green Team of the year, which showcases their dedication to environmental awareness and stewardship.

The winning team last year was Westcliff Elementary, with 425 points. The students created a schoolwide recycling program, grew a food garden, and started composting on campus.

Spring into recycling

Spring cleaning isn’t just for scrubbing floors or dusting shelves; it’s also a great time to think about the things you no longer need. Before trashing all those unused items, consider if they can be recycled, reused, or donated instead.

Recycle:

Recycling in Fort Worth is simple. The City’s curbside recycling collection allows you to place paper, plastics, metal, and glass in your blue recycling cart for pick up without worrying about sorting items first. If items cannot go in the blue cart—such as batteries or appliances—the City also has four (4) Drop-Off Stations for items that need to be recycled differently.

Reuse:

If you discover old, unused items during your spring cleaning, think about how you can give those items a new life. Maybe a glass jar could be reused as a vase, or you could upcycle your old clothes.

Donate:

Consider donating gently used items to local shelters, thrift stores, or community organizations. Things like clothing, toys, books, and furniture can all find new homes, which reduces waste and helps support people who need these items.

This spring, think about what you can recycle, reuse, or donate to help make a positive impact on the planet. And remember, recycling can also be a part of your daily routine. Whether you are decluttering your home or giving items a second life, every small action helps create a cleaner, greener city.

How to Prep for Ozone Season

Spring is nearly here, which means warmer weather is around the corner. Warmer temperatures also kick off ozone season in North Texas.

What is ozone season?

Ozone season is the period of time when increased sunlight leads to ground-level ozone, creating summertime smog and poor air quality. Poor air quality can cause human health risks like respiratory issues. Ozone season in North Texas runs from March-October.

What you can do

During this period, air quality can become unhealthy during high temperature peaks. It is important to stay in the know about air quality to help keep you and your family safe.

Here are some things you can do to reduce air quality pollution and stay safe during the high ozone season:

• Receive air quality alerts: Sign up for air quality alerts by visiting the Air North Texas webpage.
• Plan ahead: Check Air Quality Index (AQI) levels before planning outdoor activities. Plan indoor activities on high air pollution days.
• Drive less: Carpool, use public transportation, drive an electric vehicle, walk, bike, or combine errands to reduce how much time you spend driving.
• Be energy-conscious: Opt for energy-efficient appliances, turn off lights and electronics when not in use, use LED lightbulbs, and adjust your thermostat to conserve energy.

These are just a few ways you can reduce harmful emissions that contribute to poor air quality. Doing your part to live more sustainably helps everyone in the community live happier, healthier lives.
