Hi John,

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for carrying my campaign over our May fundraising goal. With your support, we will win this race and continue working towards a government that works for everyone.

But I also need to take the time to write to you about the protests that have occurred in Dallas and all over our country these past few days.

The unjust murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis sparked nationwide protests, but it is important to acknowledge that his death is only the latest in a long and painful cycle of African Americans dying at the hands of those who are sworn to protect them and a broken criminal justice system. In Texas, the black community has already experienced so much pain stemming from the killings of Jordan Edwards, Sandra Bland, Botham Jean, and Atatiana Jefferson.

And as our country reels from the impact of a pandemic that has disrupted our way of life and ended the lives of over 100,000 Americans, we must also acknowledge that this virus has disproportionately affected African-Americans and people of color as well.

Across North Texas and the rest of the country, there is justifiable pain and anger. And while I do not condone the actions of the few violent agitators who co-opted the protest in Dallas, I stand with the message of the many peaceful protesters across our district, state and country: we must deliver justice, and we must fight to end structural and racial inequities in this nation.

But we are not without agency. Our problems are made by man and so can also be unmade.

To do that we must have leaders who will seek to heal not only the wounds of the moment, but also address our long-standing structural issues. I will work every day to be one of those leaders for you and for North Texas.

Thank you,
Colin
