As you have probably heard, over the weekend, the Trump Administration arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a legal permanent resident, without filing any charges.

You can disagree with his views or his politics, but even the White House is not claiming that there is any evidence that he broke the law.

Senator Murphy filmed an important video about why this is something that everyone who cares about democracy and the rule of law should be concerned about.

They took Khalil to a detention center first in New Jersey, but when his family and his lawyer went to visit him, he was no longer there. Nobody would tell them where he’d been taken. They eventually found out that he was moved to Louisiana.

“Disappearing” people is what dictators do. This is straight out of Vladimir Putin’s playbook. In Moscow, dissenters and journalists live in fear of disappearing or getting murdered.

In America, political speech is protected — even if the president doesn’t like what you’re saying.

This week, it’s Mahmoud Khalil, but if we normalize this and let it pass without public opposition, any one of us could be next.
