(COLUMBUS, Ohio)—During a ceremony in the Rotunda of the Ohio Statehouse this morning, Ohio Supreme Court Justice Patrick DeWine officially swore in Jim Tressel as Ohio's 67th lieutenant governor.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine nominated Tressel on Monday to replace Ohio's previous lieutenant governor, Jon Husted, who is now serving in the U.S. Senate. The Ohio General Assembly confirmed Tressel's nomination on Wednesday.

"We have important unfinished business to address during the remainder of my administration; Jim Tressel will make our team stronger, and he will make me a better governor," said Governor DeWine. "Jim has been a strong and inspiring leader in every job he has ever had. As a coach, as an administrator, and as president of Youngstown State University for nine years, Jim has always excelled. He is a man of great integrity who knows and loves Ohio and has a real passion for helping young people."

Lt. Governor Tressel shares Governor DeWine’s commitment and passion for helping all Ohioans reach their God-given potential. A longstanding champion of education and workforce development, Lt. Governor Tressel will build on Ohio’s record of achievement in these key areas throughout the remaining two years of the DeWine administration.

“I’m totally humbled and excited to be here on Valentine's Day, which is also Woody Hayes’ birthday. It doesn’t get much better than that,” said Lt. Governor Tressel. “Governor DeWine has spent an entire lifetime making a difference in the Buckeye State. I want to be part of that. I want to learn from him, serve with him, and see where I can be helpful.”

A preeminent educator and football coach, Lt. Governor Tressel’s career pursuits most recently led him to serve as president of Youngstown State University (YSU) from 2014 until his retirement in 2023. During his tenure, YSU established a trajectory of success that included the increased quality of freshman classes, dramatically rising retention and graduation rates, and record fundraising efforts.  Under his leadership, the university’s Honors College grew from 300 to more than 1,200 students.

Lt. Governor Tressel’s focus on providing the tools that young people need to succeed was also evident throughout his career as a college football coach. Having served as an assistant coach at the University of Akron, Miami University, Syracuse, and The Ohio State University, Lt. Governor Tressel was named YSU head football coach in 1986. In January 2001, he became the head football coach at Ohio State, guiding the Buckeyes to seven Big Ten championships and the 2002 National Championship.
