Democrats Want to Let Homeless Activists Sue Cities for Enforcing Basic Public Order

Washington Democrats are pushing a bill that would let homeless activists sue cities over laws that prevent encampments from taking over public spaces. HB 1380 would let people challenge local regulations on sleeping, sitting, or camping in public, forcing cities into expensive legal battles just for trying to keep their communities clean and safe. Even after the Supreme Court struck down Martin v. Boise, Democrats are still looking for ways to tie the hands of local governments and make it easier for encampments to spread.

Opponents—including mayors, attorneys, and residents across the state—warn that the bill would create costly lawsuits, undermine voter-approved measures like Spokane’s ban on encampments near schools, and strip local control from communities. Meanwhile, Democrats like State Rep. Mia Gregerson claim it’s about “reasonable” regulations—ignoring the fact that cities would be strong-armed into settling lawsuits to avoid legal fees.

Most voters in communities across the state support local crackdowns on encampments – as an example, over 74% of Spokane voters voted in support of a proposition restricting camping on public ground. But Democrats are making it clear they don’t care what the people want—they’re more interested in protecting bad policies that have already made homelessness worse. Read more at Center Square.

Pay-Per-Mile: Because Democrats Haven’t Found a Tax They Don’t Love

Washington Democrats are pushing a pay-per-mile tax, and the public response has been overwhelmingly negative—over 98% of the 20,000+ people who weighed in opposed it. Of course, while the plan is “voluntary” for now, it’s only a matter of time before digital tracking and mandates follow. Adding insult to injury, 10% of the tax would be siphoned off to fund transit, bike lanes, and pedestrian projects—because apparently, drivers exist to bankroll everything but roads. Meanwhile, state officials admit this new scheme is expected to rake in just as much (or more) than the gas tax, proving it’s just another cash grab. Read more at MyNorthwest.com.

Because Wasting 105 Days Isn’t Enough: Democrats Want a Full-Time Legislature to Pass Even More Bad Laws

Democrats in Washington want more time to push their disastrous policies, and Sen. Bob Hasegawa’s latest scheme to make the Legislature full-time is just the latest power grab. Apparently, the 1,700+ bills they introduce each session aren’t enough—they need even more time to pass reckless spending plans and regulations that hurt working families. Meanwhile, Washington is already facing a multibillion-dollar budget deficit, crumbling schools, and a worsening business climate, yet Democrats think the real problem is that they don’t have enough time to legislate. Hasegawa claims a full-time Legislature would help working people, but in reality, it would just give career politicians more time to meddle in people’s lives while collecting a bigger paycheck. Washington’s part-time system forces legislators to spend more time at home with constituents—something Democrats clearly want to avoid. Instead of making government bigger, maybe they should focus on fixing the mess they’ve already made. Read more at Center Square.

Laws for Thee, But Not for Me: Washington Dems Throw a Fit Over Federal Rules

Democrats in Washington state, led by Bob Ferguson, are outraged that Trump dares to enforce federal law—something they’ve spent years openly defying. While they howl about Trump’s supposed “disdain for the Constitution,” they’ve actively obstructed ICE from detaining criminals, including murderers, and passed laws that ban local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. Now, Ferguson is throwing a tantrum over federal funds being withheld, despite his administration refusing to follow federal rules. The hypocrisy is stunning: they demand Trump “follow the damn law” while shielding illegal immigrants from deportation and suing to stop his policies at every turn. They cry foul over losing millions in green energy handouts, but happily ignore legal requirements tied to federal funding. Meanwhile, their so-called “protection of the vulnerable” includes fast-tracking sex changes on birth certificates and suing to ensure taxpayer dollars keep flowing to controversial social programs. If Democrats want to claim the moral high ground on the law, they should start by actually following it themselves. Read more at the Washington State Standard.

More Money, Worse Results: Washington Schools Flunking Despite Record Spending

Despite a 39% increase in per-student spending since 2012, Washington’s public schools have seen a sharp decline in student proficiency, with nearly half failing to meet standards in core subjects. Fourth and eighth graders have dropped significantly in national rankings for math and English, raising serious concerns about the effectiveness of increased funding. Meanwhile, the number of non-teaching school employees has grown faster than certified teachers, now making up nearly half of all public school staff. As public school performance lags, alternative education options like homeschooling and online schools have surged, with homeschooling alone increasing by 76%. Read the full study from the Washington Policy Center for a deeper dive into how public education in Washington is failing students despite record spending.
