Wildlife has always been central to Maine’s identity and culture. Mainers and visitors alike value our state’s native species for their ecological, historical, recreational, educational, and scientific significance, not to mention their beauty.
MDIFW is tasked with the preservation, protection, and enhancement of ALL inland fisheries and wildlife resources in our state including both game species and non-game wildlife. Conservation of Maine's biodiversity includes mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and a vast array of habitats across the state. Maine's wildly diverse non-game, Threatened, and Endangered species all have one thing in common. They all benefit from voluntary contributions to the Chickadee Check-off made when you file your Maine income taxes.

Perhaps the most dramatic species restoration since the State Legislature passed the Maine Endangered Species Act of 1975 has been that of Maine's bald eagle population.
In 1967, only 21 nesting pairs could be found statewide. That number now exceeds 800, a testament to what can be accomplished when Mainers come together to support the wildlife they love.
Saving species is never a short-term process, and it’s one that requires multiple approaches including monitoring, research, interventions, landowner consulting, and habitat management. We're working hard to bring the rest of Maine's Endangered and Threatened species back up to healthy population level, but program funding continues to be a challenge.
