Dear Friend,
Our justice system does not value Black lives.
The murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor are just the latest tragedies in a long and deadly history of law enforcement brutality against African Americans dating all the way back to slavery.
Today, in 2020, we have still not eradicated this evil. And each one of us must answer this question: What have I done to advance true justice and equality for African Americans?
Black Muslims have also been killed. Just last month, Yassin Mohamed was gunned down by Georgia police during a mental health episode [[link removed]] . In 2018, both Stephon Clark [[link removed]] from Sacramento and Dullah Beard [[link removed]] from Detroit were separately killed by police at their own homes.
All American Muslims and our allies have the responsibility to act. We must fight for the rights of Black people to live free from state violence.
Our justice system must value Black lives. Together, we will not rest until it does so.
Today, I’m sharing a down payment on that promise.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison was just named the lead prosecutor in George Floyd’s murder. We’re loudly advocating that he deliver justice for the Floyd family and for the nation.
That starts with holding all of the officers involved in George Floyd’s murder accountable. Only one has been arrested and charged. There are at least three more officers who share responsibility, and they too must be brought to justice.
