This Week's Update:
At today’s legislative committee meeting we were joined by former Representative Keith Seaman and Pima County Recorder Gabriella Cazares-Kelly. Representative Seaman thanked attendees for the work we’ve done and continue to do at the legislature, described how hearing from union members who aren’t professional lobbyists holds more sway with legislators, and expressed concern with the direction the newly sworn-in legislature has taken, especially in regards to placing controversial bills on the ballot and attacking Arizona’s executive branch. Recorder Cazares-Kelly spoke to us about a handful of bills that are of concern to her office which make voting and registering to vote more difficult, including for people who have been registered to vote for decades or who are used to early voting.
Among other bills, Political Director Joe Murphy informed attendees about good bills that are moving, such as HB 2262 which finally limits the length of trains in Arizona, HB 2488 which allows union apprentices who are on probation to continue working without violating their terms, and SB 1159 which raises the dollar amount limit on unpaid wage claims that can be awarded, as well as about bills we are opposed to, such as HB 2450 which reduces unemployment insurance benefit time eligibility and payouts, and SB 1353, which forces local governments to accept third party inspections of single-family homes which may not meet professional standards.

It's Time to Put Workers at the Center of the Tariff and Trade Discussion
"The IAM is all for the strategic use of tariffs to rebuild domestic manufacturing, enforce workers' rights, and stop trade cheating. But slapping tariffs on goods traded between the U.S. and Canada will drive up prices and cripple demand, leading to job losses in several industries across both nations. When it comes to U.S. and Canadian aerospace trade, for example, the proposed 25 percent tariffs would be fatal friendly fire."

Long before “blue waves,” union drives and contract fights at resort-area hotels in Anaheim and Garden Grove in the early 2000s had next to no support outside of former state Sen. Joe Dunn and former Anaheim City Councilman Richard Chavez."
