Here’s what’s happening, John:

Donald Trump issued an executive order to wipe out DEI programs across the federal government. Now, Republican Attorneys General from 19 states are pressuring companies like Costco to cut all references to DEI.

Think about the people you know — friends, family, coworkers — who’ve had doors opened because companies decided to value diversity and inclusion.

DEI principles are why pregnancy discrimination laws exist to ensure expecting parents can take maternity leave without risking their jobs. DEI also drives protections for people with disabilities, requiring reasonable accommodations so they can thrive at work.

DEI is about breaking down barriers to opportunity. But Republicans are determined to slam those doors shut.

Their attacks on DEI are rooted in the same fear and racism that fueled opposition to civil rights in the past. They want to keep power in the hands of the few and silence the rest.

But here’s the thing — while too many companies including, Boeing, Home Depot, JPMorgan Chase, and Walmart, are retreating from DEI under pressure from conservatives, Costco isn’t. Costco’s leadership doubled down on their commitment to creating a diverse, inclusive workplace. That’s the kind of courage we need from every company.
