Roundtable on the Avian Flu:
This week I held an Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee roundtable to discuss the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) response to the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Members of the Subcommittee had the opportunity to ask USDA officials questions regarding a number of issues including prevention and indemnification.
Our office heard concerns from poultry farmers struggling to implement new audit requirements that were rushed into place by the previous administration. Officials from the USDA, including the Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), assured us that they have addressed the issues. I will continue to stay on top of this issue to make sure the needs of our poultry farmers are being addressed.
