Dudik for Attorney General

John,

I'm taking a break from campaigning for a moment to talk to you about the racial violence and police brutality leading to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Tony McDade, and those across the nation practicing their Constitutional right to gather and demand more from their government.

Like so many of us, I was deeply horrified by the brutal violence inflicted in another senseless murder of an African American. But the most horrific aspect of these recent deaths is that this is not new, but is a part of the ugly history of racism and hatred that is embedded in our country. The demonstrations over the weekend are a reflection of the pain that the hundreds of years of systemic racism have caused.

We are at a time where we can demand better from everyone, and create a new normal where racism is no longer tolerated. Now is the moment to demand justice and real change to reshape our country for an equitable future. I'm finding a glimmer of hope in this dark hour in seeing just how many people are not staying silent and are looking for ways to come together to take steps on the long road to move Montana and our nation forward.

If you are struggling to find the words or the right actions to take, especially if you come from a place of privilege, it is time to take a step back and listen. Listen to those who feel this pain, and commit to following their lead on this important work.

I hope that out of this moment, we all find the strength to come together, show compassion for one another, and emerge as a better, more just nation.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Dudik
