Happy Valentineās Day from Wildlands Network!
Have you ever thought about how much prairie dogs do for our planet? Today, weāre celebrating these grassland underdogs whose extensive networks of colonies and burrows aid soil health, provide shelter for owls, insects, and others, and hold the key to saving a species that once nearly vanished: the endangered black-footed ferret.

Weāre rewilding these grassland ecosystems by using cutting-edge deep-learning technology to map prairie dog burrows and identify the best reintroduction sites for ferrets in New Mexico and Utah. We recently partnered with student researchers at Bosque School to refine our models and continue work to ensure these speciesāalongside the ecosystems they supportāare conserved and protected.
Watch this short film to go to the prairie with this team and discover how weāre merging technology and fieldwork to monitor miles of hidden networks beneath the soil.
