2024 was a tough year – though not in the way you might expect. Yes, it was tough for climate-vulnerable communities, who lost homes and loved ones to fire and flood. Yes, people around the world – including in the UK – continued to struggle paying for basic necessities like heating and food. But apparently, it’s Shell and BP who we should be thinking of. Because their combined £26.2 billion in profits for 2024 equals a Bad Year for Big Oil!(1)
These two British companies made more than double the £11.6 billion that the UK has committed to climate finance for the global south over four years. When this is seen as a bad year, something has gone seriously wrong. It’s the result of an economy built around maximising giant profits for destructive companies.
But as big as the problems might feel, a better future is possible. We can break free from the grip of the fossil fuel giants and challenge the global economic rules that put corporate profits above people and the planet.
That means shifting from climate-wrecking fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy without leaving any nation or community behind – and it means dismantling toxic trade deals that let corporations sue governments for protecting the environment.

The climate crisis isn’t a law of nature. Neither is the cost-of-living crisis or rising global inequality. They’re the result of political decisions in a global economy rigged to serve corporate power and profit.
I’m not writing to tell you how bad things are. I’m writing to remind you that hope and action go hand in hand. Amid headlines of crisis, there are stories of people power and progress. Just recently, a UK court ruled that consent to drill the Rosebank oil field was approved unlawfully – a huge victory made possible by climate activists.
