Friend,

Today is June 1st. The third time since the COVID-19 pandemic hit New York that renters have had to choose between rent and groceries.

On Saturday I marched for justice for George Floyd. Today I march to cancel rent. These struggles are not separate, our movements are connected.

We need to protect people, not property. Over 1 million tenants in New York can't pay rent. 92,000 New Yorkers are homeless. The State and the Federal Government are continuing to fail New Yorkers by refusing to #CancelRent and refusing to invest in housing and communities.

They are failing to provide relief for undocumented New Yorkers left out of the COVID-19 recovery. And they are failing to hold brutal and killer cops accountability right here in New York and across the country.

Black lives matter. Black communities matter. It’s time for New York’s leaders to act like it.

In solidarity,

Leroy Johnson, NYCC
