Dear John, Across the country, communities of color are feeling deep and pervasive pain. A once in a lifetime pandemic is disproportionately affecting communities of color, who have less access to testing and treatment while having comorbidities that put them at higher risk. Tens of thousands of folks are also taking to the streets to demand accountability and justice for the murder of George Floyd by police. We cannot ignore their pain and suffering and rightful calls for action. Although many people are desperate to go back to "normal," "normal" wasn't safe or equitable for Black and brown communities. We can’t be complacent and accept going back to "normal." We need to push forward for justice for George Floyd, his family, and all communities of color. We need to address systemic racism head-on. It will take all of us coming together -- through peaceful protests, organizing, and politics -- to secure changes that treat all human beings humanely and equally. We’re all a part of the same team -- but when you’re part of a team, you know you’re only as good as your weakest link. Racism is America’s weakest link and is holding us back from reaching our greatest potential. We can no longer sweep it under the rug and hope for things to change. Let’s all step up, let’s all do better, let’s all change this country. Standing Tall for All, J.D. Scholten |
