Thirty years ago this year, an animal protection lawyer named Steven M. Wise founded the Nonhuman Rights Project. “I had concluded that there was a powerful structural bias in the law against protecting even the most fundamental interests of nonhuman animals,” Steve said. “Every one of them had always been considered a legal thing incapable of possessing any legal rights. I decided this had to change.” A year ago today, Steve died from glioblastoma. The legacy he left is profound, and his vision of a world where nonhuman rights are recognized alongside human rights lives on through everyone who works for and supports the NhRP.
