Politics in a Nutshell
Trump’s Republicans look to cut Medicaid [[link removed]] : The proposed House Republican budget outline orders the House Energy and Commerce Committee to cut $880 billion over ten years from programs they oversee, one of the largest being Medicaid. It will be impossible to meet their goals without taking away Medicaid coverage from millions of Americans.
Reynolds to give more public dollars to private schools [[link removed]] : The amount of public money Iowa is handing out for private school vouchers will only increase this school year. The governor plans on vouchers costing an extra $96 million, leaving the grand sum at over $300 million just this year alone. Her plan boosts the amount of tax-payer money given to her voucher program by 44 percent, while public schools will only receive a 2 percent increase in funding.
Mike Zimmer is sworn into office after flipping Senate District 35 blue: [[link removed]] Mike Zimmer won the special election against Kate Whittington in Senate District 35, the seat previously held by now Lieutenant Governor Chris Cournoyer. Thanks to Zimmer’s hard work and care for the people in his district, Republican control of Iowa has been lessened by one seat!

Senator Chuck Grassley: (202) 224-3744
What he needs to hear: tell Grassley to say no to Medicaid cuts! Almost 700,000 Iowans rely on Medicaid, tell him to not leave our citizens behind in the dust!
Senator Joni Ernst: (202) 224-3254
What she needs to hear: tell Ernst to say no to Medicaid cuts! Almost 700,000 Iowans rely on Medicaid, tell her to not leave our citizens behind in the dust!
Governor Kim Reynolds: (515) 281-5211
What she needs to hear: tell Reynolds to stop giving public money to private schools! Those hundreds of millions should be spent supporting public education, which has struggled ever since Reynolds took control.
Note From the Chair
Hey folks! Rita Hart here.
Republicans in Washington D.C. have presented their budget plan, and cuts to Medicaid are on the table. The only thing we don’t know is how deep they will go. Hundreds of thousands of Iowans all over the state rely on Medicaid to afford their treatments and medicine. Our Republican Senators and Representatives either don’t care if their constituents lose their coverage, or they’re counting on it.
Where is Governor Reynolds during all of this? Instead of fighting for Iowans’ medical coverage she’s decided to give even more public money to private schools. This school year’s expected wealthy family give out is planned to be over $300 million – money that should be going to provide necessary funding for the public schools Reynolds has left behind.
Republicans continue to show that their leadership only causes more pain for Iowa’s citizens. If you want to help defeat them next November, you can help by volunteering here: Volunteer for Iowa Democrats [[link removed]] .
Our work continues,
Sincerely,
Rita Hart
