Friends,
I’m voting NO on the GOP billionaire giveaway bill coming to the Senate floor this week — because it’s a bad bill for the American economy and for American families.
Republicans may be calling this a funding bill, but let’s be clear: What it actually does is hand Trump a blank check to shut down whatever he wants, hurting everyday people in order to pay for tax breaks for the uber-rich.
Hell no!
The people of Virginia did not elect me to represent them in the U.S. Senate just for me to hand over a “yes” vote to a GOP majority that is essentially holding the federal government hostage to advance their agenda of slashing critical programs to pay for handouts to billionaires.
Democrats may be in the minority right now, but that doesn’t mean we get a pass when it comes to fighting back against the dangerous and extreme legislation the GOP is trying to push forward.
I will NOT vote for legislation that hurts our economy and gives even more unchecked power to Donald Trump.
As for what’s next — Republicans control all three branches of government right now, and they own the consequences of their actions. I urge my GOP colleagues in the strongest possible terms to work on a short-term spending bill ASAP that will keep the government open while the appropriations bill is negotiated into more acceptable terms.
I’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
