We thought you might like a peek behind the scenes of what it takes to give a speech like the one Senator Slotkin gave last week. We only had one week to write and execute the live speech on CNN – so a lot went into it.
First, the writing. Elissa likes to work collaboratively. For big events - debates, speeches, etc. - she likes to prepare at home on her farm in Holly. For this speech, she spent the better part of the weekend editing and working through versions and drafts from her home.

Meanwhile... the team was working on the set.
Second, the set up. We worked with a production crew to figure out the best lighting and backdrop for the shot. We didn’t want it to be complicated - the focus of the speech was what Elissa was saying and not what was happening behind her.

Third, rehearsals. With something like this, practice really does make perfect. Words that feel totally normal on a page sometimes are hard to say out loud. We made cuts and changed words during the process of rehearsing the text in the time leading up to the live speech.

Fourth, show time. At around 11:10 PM on Tuesday, it was show time.

After the speech went off without a hitch, we broke down the set, cleaned everything up, and went to a local bar to celebrate.

Moments like this are exhilarating and make us proud to work for Elissa.
