WILL's Voter ID Findings Shatter Political Narrative

WILL released a new report, “Doing the Math: How Voter ID Laws Affect Turnout in Wisconsin,” which found that since the enactment of Wisconsin’s voter ID requirements ten years ago, overall voter turnout in the state has increased.

Our analysis also found no evidence of disenfranchisement among minority groups or in Dane or Milwaukee counties, countering the Left's claims of negative effects on voter participation.

The report was first highlighted by Fox News this morning, New study from key swing state shatters popular narrative against Voter ID: 'No evidence': The study also found that voter ID did not suppress minority voters.

On the April 1st spring election, Wisconsin will vote on a constitutional amendment to enshrine a voter identification requirement in the state constitution. Voter ID laws have been a point of contention across the United States, with proponents arguing that they ensure the integrity of elections, while critics contend that they disenfranchise vulnerable populations.  Our efforts are helping inform voters ahead of that pivotal election.

WILL Secures Injunction for Student Athlete Against WIAA

WILL secured a temporary injunction for our client, Macy Weigel, against the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA).

WILL Associate Counsel, Skylar Croy, stated, “The WIAA made an arbitrary decision to exclude a student athlete from a school-sponsored and taxpayer-funded co-curricular activity. Today, that injustice has been rectified for now.”

Emily Weigel stated, “I am excited for my daughter to get on the field with her friends and enjoy her junior year playing softball. She is so grateful for this opportunity.”

From the judge’s order: Circuit Court Judge, Michael P. Screnock, wrote, “The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association is enjoined from applying the ineligibility provisions of Article II, Section 3.A.3. of its Rules of Eligibility to Macy Weigel with respect to her participation in varsity sports with Baraboo High School during the 2024-25 school year.”

Wisconsin Teacher Secures Financial Compensation

WILL announced that the Argyle School District has agreed to pay $20,000 to resolve our lawsuit on behalf of our client, Jordan Cernek. Our lawsuit alleged a violation of his right to the free exercise of his religion and a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

In May of 2023, the District decided not to renew Mr. Cernek’s teaching contract after he opposed a requirement that all staff use the preferred names and pronouns of transgender students, effectively firing him from his job. The agreement we reached with the school district ends further legal proceedings.

Property Rights Case Continues

Last week, the Door County Circuit Court denied the Village of Sister Bay’s motion to dismiss, allowing the lawsuit filed by WILL to proceed.

We represent four homeowners in Sister Bay who are challenging the Village’s four-bedroom limit on short-term rentals.

All four homeowners were either already renting their homes, or began building them, well before the four-bedroom limit was adopted.

Our lawsuit argues that the limit violates the right-to-rent law, is arbitrary and irrational, and cannot be applied to pre-existing properties.

A Shot Out from WSJ's Kim Strassel

WILL's efforts to protect free speech in Wisconsin were noticed by the WSJ's Kim Strassel:

"Signs, signs, everywhere, including in the Wisconsin village of Slinger. Slinger officials in early February instructed resident Dwight Mueller to take down a Trump sign on his private property, since flags displaying “political messages or content” violated Village ordinances. The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty sent the village a letter warning it would take legal action on the grounds of unconstitutional, content-based restrictions on speech. The village backed down, writing that it was rescinding the notices of violation issued by the “Village Building Inspector.” Even the little free-speech fights matter."
