Dear MoveOn member,
Yesterday, the Trump administration fired half of the staff at the Department of Education.1 The workers received an email in the afternoon telling them to work from home the following day, and hours later news broke that half of them would be losing their jobs.
These cruel firings gut the agency's ability to provide the essential funding that public schools across the country desperately rely on to support their students. It will result in class sizes ballooning, cuts of critical job training programs, higher education becoming an even bigger financial stretch for most, special education ripped away for students with disabilities, and civil rights protections eroded.
This is just the latest round of firings led by billionaire Elon Musk to erode our public services to enrich himself. Since President Donald Trump took office, tens of thousands of federal workers have lost their jobs, and not just in Washington, D.C., but across the country.2 And when these workers get pushed out, we all lose. From compromised food safety inspections to increased flight safety concerns to delayed veterans' benefits to disrupted Social Security services and so much more, American families and our local communities are paying the price for DOGE's greedy cuts against our workers and public services.
The mass call to "Save Our Services! Let Us Work!" is led by federal workers fighting to continue their critical public work for all of us. And we'll be joined by speakers like Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers; Robert Reich, labor secretary; Liz Schuler, president of the AFL-CIO; Maurice Mitchell, National Director of Working Families Organization, and members of Congress on the front lines fighting against Trump and Musk's funding crisis.
Here's what you can expect on the call:
Right now, Republicans in Congress are attempting to ram through the next round of Trump's tax cuts for the richest in our country at the expense of the rest of us.3 And one key tactic to accomplish this goal? Firing federal workers and gutting the programs and research that nearly all of us depend on daily.
Since Donald Trump has taken office, he has not done a single thing to make lives better for our families and communities. It's essential that we come together to learn and strategize how to stop this billionaire-backed takeover of our government.
Thanks for all you do.
