Dear Neighbor,
This past week in Washington flew by!
Among my chief focuses was participating in my first Budget Committee mark-up this Congress—what does that mean?
The Budget Committee is where the majority in Congress -Republicans right now- present their budget plan for the year, outlining overall spending and revenue targets for Congress.
Budgets reflect your priorities. They show what you want to spend taxpayer money on, and what you want to eliminate. Unfortunately, Republicans’ proposal is a direct attack on the middle class. It slashes essential programs that help millions of families afford healthcare, put food on the table, and keep their children in school—all while prioritizing billionaire donors. Instead of investing in the American people, their plan shifts taxpayer dollars away from middle-class families to benefit the wealthy.
But my House Democratic colleagues and I fought back. We exposed their harmful agenda and did everything in our power to stop the budget from moving from the committee to the full floor for a vote.

I offered two amendments to improve the Republican Rip Off budget:
1.) Protect Social Security
2.) Protect the IRS' ability to provide good customer service and hold wealthy tax cheats accountable
House Budget Democrats unanimously voted YES. Republicans unanimously voted NO. Their betrayal of Americans couldn’t be clearer, as they voted down every one of my Democratic colleague’s amendments.

The budget passed last night, but the fight isn’t over. Democrats will keep pushing back against Donald Trump and House Republicans' far-right agenda.
In December, we rejected a Republican attempt to suspend the debt ceiling for up to four years, which would have given Trump a $4 trillion blank check for the GOP tax plan. Democrats stood firm then, and we will again.
As I return home to continue addressing recovery efforts from the Eaton Fire and other local concerns, I look forward to hearing from you.
